Some email virus filters want to sit between your mail program and your mail server, in just the way that SpamPal does.

There's actually no reason why they can't; you just have them setup in serial (often called a chain), so that your virus filter fetches its mail through SpamPal rather than directly from your mailserver, and then your email program fetches the mail through the virus filter.

The following links show what is needed to use your anti-virus software with Spampal (and just to prove your anti-virus software is working, you can send yourself a test by visiting this page):

TrendMicro OfficeScan
Note left by Adrian Acuna at 2005-01-28 01:25:09

I recently installed OfficeScan across the network here and had to configure it work in conjunction with SpamPal. I've listed some basic notes when setting it up:

1. It's best to have installed OfficeScan and it's POPMail Scan plug-in first. This makes sure all the server entries are right.
2. OfficeScan uses Port 110 so you'll have to set SpamPal to listen on a different port. If you happen to start SpamPal while using the same port, it will cause OfficeScan and SpamPal to not work at all. You'll have to close "POP3Trap.exe" through the Task Manager and then restart it after you get all the server names configured correctly. You can restart it from the ProgramFiles\Trend Micro\OfficeScan directory.
3. The same basic setup is the same as the rest of the AV producs. OfficeScan sets your POP server to "localhost".

Some people seem to be getting a little confused about what the annotations system is for... the idea is you can leave useful tips for other people. You may NOT ask questions, about SpamPal or other software, in the annotations section. For SpamPal issues, try the SpamPal support site http://www.spampalforums.org/ - for issues with other software, contact your supplier.

EICAR Test...
Note left by R. Damian Koziel at 2005-06-05 09:24:04

It states above "The following links show what is needed to use your anti-virus software with Spampal (and just to prove your anti-virus software is working, you can send yourself a test by visiting this [http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm] page."

This is misleading.

When I first read this, it sounded like this site will send you a test EICAR message. It will not.

Yes, you can send yourself a test by grabbing the EICAR test string and send it to yourself, but this is getting harder to do:

1. You have to stop your AV just to send the mesasge.
2. You have to turn your AV on *before* you get the message.

An easier approach is to use: http://pages.prodigy.net/seims/antivirustest.htm

Note that if your ISP offers virus protection, you'll have to disable that as well for the duration of your testing.
